Direct answer
For finance questions, often yes. Xero offers a read-only connector for Claude and a plugin inside ChatGPT, so you can ask about cash, invoices and bills in plain English; developers can also use Xero's own MCP server, which can write as well as read. What none of them can see is everything outside Xero: jobs, the CRM, stock, rotas and sector systems. Joining those up safely, read-only where possible, is the part that needs building.
Everything below was checked on Xero's and Intuit's own pages on 24 October 2026. These products are changing month by month, so check the dates against what you see in your own account.
What the Xero connector answers well
Xero's page for its Claude connector describes plain-English questions about profit, cash, invoices and customers, answered from your live Xero data with a link back to the matching report, invoice or contact. You need a Claude account (free or paid) and an active Xero subscription; the connector itself costs nothing to add. You add Xero from Claude's connectors directory, sign in with your Xero login and pick the organisation.
It is read-only. Xero's page says so directly: "Claude has no write actions." It can't raise an invoice, change a contact or send a reminder. Xero also says the data isn't used to train AI models and that the connector is not a source of tax or financial advice.
Questions that work well, because the answer lives entirely in Xero:
- How much cash do we have across the accounts today?
- Who owes us money, and which invoices are more than 30 days overdue?
- What do we owe suppliers this month, and when is it due?
- How does this quarter's profit compare with the same quarter last year?
- Which customers have we invoiced most this year?
ChatGPT users get a similar route. On 16 September 2026 Xero announced that its plugin in ChatGPT was live, "powered by JAX" (Xero's own AI assistant), covering profit and loss, the balance sheet, invoices and bills. The same announcement introduced Xero in Claude for Small Business, which goes a step further than answering questions: it prepares a first-pass draft of work such as a business pulse, a cash flow snapshot, overdue invoice chasing, month-end preparation and recurring reports or briefs, for a person to review.
What it can't see
The connector sees Xero. Most of the questions owners actually ask cross the edge of the accounts:

| Question | Needs Xero | Needs something else |
|---|---|---|
| Which jobs finished last week haven't been invoiced? | Invoices raised | Job status in your job management software |
| Which overdue customers have work booked next week? | Overdue invoices | Bookings in the calendar or job system |
| Are we making money on the jobs we quoted in March? | Invoices and costs | Quotes, hours worked and materials per job |
| How many enquiries did we get, and how many became paid work? | Paid invoices | Enquiries in the CRM, inbox or WhatsApp |
| Can we take the big order without running out of stock? | Purchase bills | Stock levels and lead times |
| Do we have the people to cover next week's jobs? | Nothing | Rotas, holidays and jobs booked |
Sector systems sit in the same place: a booking system for a clinic, a weighbridge system for a waste site, a property management system for a letting agent. If the answer depends on those, the Xero connector can tell you half of it, and you'll still be the person joining the two halves together.
Xero JAX and QuickBooks' agents: what they already do
Both accounting platforms are building their own assistants, and some of what you want may already be in your subscription.
Xero (as of October 2026). JAX chat is available to all Xero subscribers, with no extra charge at present, according to Xero's UK JAX page. It answers questions about your own data and can draft an invoice from a previous quote. Xero has also taken JAX to other assistants: an integration with Microsoft 365, announced on 1 July 2026, puts JAX inside Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and can bring Xero data into Excel, Word and PowerPoint; and on 14 October 2026 Xero announced an app for Google Gemini, which can take actions such as sending a payment reminder but asks the user to confirm any change to financial data first.
QuickBooks (UK, as listed in October 2026). Intuit's UK AI page describes an Intuit Intelligence chat, in beta, that answers questions such as which invoices you're waiting on, with a monthly limit on queries. It also lists accounting AI that categorises transactions for approval, customer AI for leads and follow-ups on the Plus plan, finance AI that tracks KPIs on Advanced, and a VAT feature that checks profit and loss against net sales. The page gives no launch dates.
Both stop at the same place: they see their own ledger. A QuickBooks or Xero assistant can tell you who owes you money, but not which of those customers your team is visiting tomorrow.
Joining the missing systems safely
There are three ways to let an assistant see more than Xero. Use the first that fits.
- Use the other system's own connector, if it has one. Some CRMs and project tools publish their own connectors for Claude or ChatGPT, so check yours first. Two read-only connectors side by side cover a lot of questions.
- Connect a system that has no connector through an MCP server: a small piece of software that exposes chosen data to the assistant, with the permissions you set. Xero runs its own for developers. Its documentation (checked 24 October 2026) says it reads and writes Xero data, that its first version doesn't ask the user to confirm before changing data, and that setup is documented for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. On Xero's Starter developer tier it works only with the demo organisation, so a live organisation needs a paid developer plan.
- Combine the data first. A nightly or hourly job copies the figures you care about from each system into one read-only store, with the definitions written down, and the assistant reads that. This is slower to set up and much easier to check, because every number has one source.
Whichever route you take, four rules keep it safe:
- Start read-only. An assistant that can only read can't send the wrong invoice. Add write access one action at a time, and only where a person confirms each change, as Xero's Gemini app already does.
- Give it the minimum. Grant only the scopes and fields each question needs. Payroll and bank details rarely need to be in reach.
- Know which data leaves your systems. Anything the assistant reads goes to the AI provider. Check your plan's terms on retention and training. Xero's own developer terms, updated for 2026, ban using data from its API to train AI or machine-learning models.
- Keep a person on any action. Rules handle what must be exact, the AI handles the question and the summary, and a named person signs off anything that changes money, records or what a customer receives.
This is the kind of work we build: joining these systems to the AI seat a firm already pays for (Claude, for example) rather than selling another one. Our closest published example is saved.md, which connects to AI tools through MCP. The approach is the same whichever accounts software sits underneath.
The daily brief as the next step
Asking questions is useful when you remember to ask. The next step is getting the answers before you ask: a short message each morning with cash, overdue invoices, today's jobs and anything off track, each number pulled from the system that owns it and checked by a named person. Xero now lists "recurring reports or briefs" among the Claude for Small Business workflows; for the Xero side, that may be all you need. The daily owner brief covers which numbers to include, how to define each one, and who should check the alerts.
When not to bother
If every question you ask is about finance, the connector may be enough. Add it, use it for a month, and write down the questions it couldn't answer. If that list stays short, stop there.
The same goes if your jobs, quotes and invoices already live in one product with its own assistant, or if you only look at the numbers once a month with your accountant. A build earns its place when the same cross-system question comes up every week and someone, usually you, spends time answering it by hand.
